Back in the early days of the Urban Roamer, one of the early posts published in the site was a memoriam to the SM Megamall Ice Skating Rink. long considered as a landmark that put the mall and SM as a whole on the map. At that time, SM Megamall was undergoing what could be considered the early phase of its expansion as the Ice Skating Rink and the nearby Bowling area had to give way to more retailers who wish to set shop in the bustling mall.
For the next four years or so, SM Megamall has constantly expanded itself to as far as its property can accommodate, putting up the Atrium expansion, a carpark/office space building, and finally, the Mega Fashion Hall building.
Opened last January 2014, the Mega Fashion Hall would serve as the home for those classy brands based overseas like Uniqlo, H&M, (their first store in the Philippines by the way) Zara, American Eagle Outfitters, to name a few. There are also some restaurants that will be based in the hall, most notably the popular buffet restaurant Vikings. In addition, there is also an IMAX cinema as well as the more intimate movie theater Director’s Club located in this new building. It is also the new home of SM Bowling, making a comeback in this mall after a long absence.
But perhaps the biggest news as far as comebacks are concerned is the return of the SM Ice Skating Rink, now finding itself at the topmost level of the mall compared to its previous location at the lower ground floor. It is also bigger now as the rink is said to be on an “Olympic” sized level now.
The timing couldn’t come at a better time, with the popularity these days of Disney’s animated flick “Frozen” and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia where the Philippines will be sending a representative to this event for the first time since 1992 as Michael Christian Martinez will be competing in…you guessed it, figure skating. (and yes, he is a product of SM Ice Skating.
For those who are nostalgic about SM Megamall ice skating, this is one homecoming that is unexpected but a pleasant one.
