the Pasig formerly of Rizal: the second Rizal capitol

Last time, we talked about Pasig’s importance before as the capital of the Province of Rizal when the latter was first established. For a while, the seat of power was located near the banks of the Marikina River, where it stayed for almost 50 years. Fast forward to 1950, as the Rizal provincial capitol found itself settled in its new home, right along Shaw Boulevard near what was to become the Ortigas Center business district. The land that new capitol sat on was made possible through a donation of the land by its landowners, the Ortigas family,.whose property once extended to what are now parts Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasig, and Quezon…

the Pasig formerly of Rizal: Rizal’s first Capitol

Lying on the eastern end of Metro Manila lies the city known as Pasig, which serves as an industrial and commercial hub in the east, as well as the metropolis’ gateway to the eastern highlands of Rizal, Quezon, and eastern Laguna. But long before it became part of the metropolis, Pasig was one of the many towns and cities which used to be part of Rizal province itself. But Pasig holds a more special distinction of being what was once the province’s seat of power ever since the American colonial government established a new province named after the national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in 1901.

the food bazaars at Ortigas Center

It’s been a while since I wrote about Banchetto. And a lot have happened since then. Foremost of which was the end of the Banchetto at the former Emerald Avenue on May 7, 2011, which according to one of the organizers, was a result of “collateral damage” between the area’s barangay government (Brgy. San Antonio in this case) and Ortigas Center. For a time, the Banchetto Fridays were held near the Forum Robinsons Mall in Pioneer St. in Mandaluyong, where Banchetto has been holding an overnight food market every Wednesday and Thursday nights.

    Welcome to the Ark (Avilon)

The Bible tells us of a large vessel, an ark built by Noah as commanded to him by God as a means for him, his family, and the animals to be safe from the rains and the floods that God sent to submerge the earth. Even in modern standards, the size of this ark is huge, huge enough to accommodate the various pairs of species of animals, big and small. The story of Noah’s ark has been one of those Bible stories that has captured the imagination of generations. It’s this particular inspiration that has led to the country’s first indoor zoo: the Ark Avilon.
